Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change the batteries in my smoke detector or carbon monoxide alarm?

The Fire Department would like to encourage residents to replace the batteries (9 volt and AA) in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms every six months. The Portage Fire Department has batteries available at the fire station. If assistance is needed with installing the batteries in your smoke or carbon monoxide alarms, please contact the fire department at (608) 742-2172 and someone will schedule a time to come and assist. The batteries we receive are donated each year by Ray-o-Vac/Energizer.

When is a Burn Permit required?

The City of Portage requires a burn permit for all open burning other than outdoor recreational fire pits or fireplaces.  The permit can be found on the Portage Fire Department Website (Click Here for Burn Permit) or you can stop into the station.

For those of you that live outside of the City and wish to burn, you must contact the DNR at https://dnr.wi.gov/burnpermits or 1-888-947-2876. Due to the Coronavirus there are no in person DNR burn permits being issued.
